Opening night of the 16th Annual OUTFEST Film festival in Los Angeles will include tribute to "one of the world's most amazing actors, Ian McKellen." OUTFEST created this award to recognize excellence in gay and lesbian film. Director John Schlesinger was the 1997 recipient. This year, OUTFEST will honor Sir Ian McKellen with this award "for his unflinching commitment to creating fully realized gay characters on screen and his pioneering efforts as one of the first out actors." The award will be presented by author Armistead Maupin (Tales of the City).
