Sir Ian McKellen, currently starring in The Lord
of the Rings and the soon to be released X2, and on stage in
Dance of Death at the Lyric Theatre, will be appearing at The
Space in London on Sunday, May 4 at 7pm. He will be taking questions
from the audience about his life and career on stage and screen.
He'll also be reading and performing selections from Tolkien and
Shakespeare.
Sir Ian is a principal patron of The Space arts
centre, a performance space/gallery/cafe bar/restaurant in an historic and
architecturally significant building on the Isle of Dogs.
Sir Ian recently recalled how he first became involved with The Space.
"When I moved to the moribund docklands of the East End of London over 20
years ago there were very few amenities where local residents could meet
and be entertained - if we disregard the public houses! There was a sad
lack of cinemas or theatres. Then Robert Richardson rescued the derelict
chapel that had once served the sailors and others who worked the docks.
Almost singlehanded he imagined an intimate space where performers could
work close to their audience. I watched the transformation and have loved
visiting The SPACE (St Paul's Arts CEntre) just as I am very happy to be
performing there once more."
The May 4 event is open to the public by purchase of
advance tickets only, by telephone 0207 515 7799 or email
ali@space.org.uk. Ticket prices £30/ £25.
