Ian McKellen in the role of Morgan Evans

Arts Theatre, Ipswich, Suffolk

20 August 1963 - 7 September 1963

Words from Ian McKellen

The story, part autobiographical, of the young Welsh miner who escapes to Oxford University with the backing of his doughty tutor. Emlyn Williams wrote it for himself, starring opposite Sybil Thorndike in the first production. By this time, I was accustomed to play-carrying roles and Morgan Evans is one of the most satisfying parts for a young man with beautifully placed laugh-lines and tear-jerking moments.
