Words from Ian McKellen

I was the Pope, Trevor Nunn my kneeling acolyte. As Gluttony I wore a mask, which I've tried to avoid ever since. The audience at Stratford sat on the grass sloping away from the stage that backed onto the River Avon. Audibility was a problem and I haven't favoured al fresco performances ever since. — Ian McKellen, December 2006
