"I'm not the first actor to tour America with Shakespeare. There was
a production of Hamlet last century by English actors touring
America. They found themselves doing Hamlet for a bunch of
rather appreciative cowboys. The sun was shining and they went
through the full 4 1/2 hour version. And finally as the sun began to
set they arrived at the curtain call. The cowboys applauded
enthusiastically and there were even calls of "Author, Author," so
just for a joke Rosencranz pushed Guilderstern forward; and they
shot him." |
